Uber brings electric bike rentals to Europe

Its Jump on-demand bikes will roll out across the German capital this summer. Uber will bring its on-demand electric bike service to Europe.

The company's Jump bikes will break into Berlin before the end of summer and expand to other European cities later.

"Uber is ready to help address some of the biggest challenges facing German cities - tackling air pollution, reducing congestion and increasing access to cleaner transportation solutions," said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber in Berlin. on Wednesday.

Uber acquired the Jump bike rental program in April, as part of its effort to drive people away from car ownership. Riders pay $ 2 per ride for 30 minutes on one of its electric bikes in Washington, San Francisco, where it first tested the program earlier this year, and in other California cities.

Bicycles offer an electrical boost of up to 20 mph (30 km / ph) each time the rider pedals.

Berlin, however, already has several bike rental options. OBike, Mobike and LimeBike (which also offer an electric option) have established application-based services in the German capital.

Khosrowshahi has been on a charming offensive tour of Europe since late May, announcing insurance for drivers in the region and a $ 23.5 million investment in a Paris development center for flying taxis.
