The Hyperloop proposes to travel 1000km in less than an hour. Will it be possible? With this transport technology designed by Elon Musk, it seems that in 2021 it will be possible.
The idea of the Hyperloop was born almost five years ago, when Elon Musk presented his mega-fast transportation system project to the world. Many were a little skeptical about the subject, which is not usually unusual when ventures of this magnitude are presented, very difficult to understand.
The Hyperloop is designed by a group of MIT students and other experts, who won an ideas competition that was convened by Musk three years ago to design the capsules for the transportation system of the future.
This is how it will work
The Hyperloop will carry passengers through a propulsion system similar to that used by space rockets, although these capsules will be propelled by air and using solar energy.
One of the fundamental principles for its creator is that the capsule can levitate in the pipe (cylindrical space through which the capsule will travel with its passengers) through which it makes its journey.
The means of transport, which will travel at 1200 km / h, also includes an emergency braking system (at that speed, it would be strange if it did not have it, right?) Which is activated in case the computer systems fail .
To test the Hyperloop capsules, a 1.2 km long and 1.6 m diameter pipeline has been created in Hawthorne (California) and a second section is being built, in Nevada, 8 km long and 2 m wide. diameter.
In June 2016, the first propulsion tests were carried out on an open road (it means open space, that is, without pipes) and in 2017 they made a demonstration in the experimental section under vacuum conditions.
Thanks to these tests, the reality of the challenge presented by putting the Hyperloop into operation was revealed. Of the nine designs presented, three passed the preliminary analyzes and, of these, only one managed to successfully complete the experimental section, although it had problems in the vacuum system in the test pipe. This implies making new improvements based on previous tests, in order to have a hyperloop without failures.
Uniting New York and Washington
AccordingElon musk The initial stretch of this project would be between New York and Washington, and it would become the largest facility of this type in the world.
Although the company clarifies that it is a simple “partial vacuum”, the truth is that it is a 99.9% vacuum, comparable to that of outer space (that is, the conditions in which the Hyperloop will operate are almost the same as those of a shuttle in space). While it is difficult to combine this with a 300 km tube and capsules with passengers inside (obviously pressurized to maintain atmospheric pressure inside), Musk assures that they will do everything possible to carry out this project that will revolutionize the industry. transportation around the world.
