The number of marathons, half marathons and other running events in Italy continues to grow and it would be difficult to write about them all, but we at our website always want to report the initiatives that combine a good day of running with a noble end. This is the case of Alzheimer's marathon born to raise funds to fight Alzheimer's disease.
What is Alzheimer's disease
For those who don't know it yet, Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, accounting for about 60% of cases.
Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative neurological disease that affects the brain, progressively leading the patient to a state of total dependence, thus creating a very complex and difficult situation for the family that must assist him.
The elderly over the age of 60 who are affected by various forms of dementia in our country are over 1.3 million, about 10% of the total of which over 800,000 are affected by Alzheimer's disease. Even higher rates of disease onset are found between the ages of 75 and 85.
The number of people affected is also increasing due to the progressive aging of the population so it is a disease that will increasingly have an impact on our society.
To date, the causes of the disease are still unknown. The origin seems to be linked to various factors such as genetics, environment and lifestyle.
