  • ancient

  • with a moderate scent,
  • not scented.

Other classifications are based on the type of flower the flowers ofpinkthey can be small or large, they can be separated in bunches, in panicles or grow individually. Still, the flowers can be single or double… Last but not least, depending on the flowering we are talking aboutremontant roses, very re-flowering or hybrid flowering.

Among other “practical” classifications, itypes of rosesthey can also be distinguished in:

  • Hedge roses
  • Ground coverings

Types of roses

As is clear, it is not easy to talk abouttypes of rosesbecause the context is very vast. Let's start with the typical classification.

Botanical roses

They are roses that grow wild, they are almost allnot re-floweringwith bushy growth. The flowers are generally clear, white or pink, only in the Foetida do yellow roses appear. The botanical roses they are particularly scenic and grow with vigorous shrubs that need a lot of space.

Who wantsgrow roses in the North, in mountainous areas and in cold areas, can take advantage of different species of botanical roses or move towards the old roses, choosing rustic species and more resistant to cold.

Ancient roses

TheroseancientI'mthose found in nature, not subjected to crossbreeding. This should be the feature but in reality this classification has many application problems. In theory, theold rosesthey should be natural plants, not subjected to selection or hybridization. They are plants selected in nature and already documented before 1867, when it washybridized the first modern rose.

Theold rosesthey can have white, red, yellow, fuchsia, pink flowers… Who is looking for fragrant rosescan point toold roses. When roses thrived exclusively in their natural habitat, they had the "urgency" to attract pollinating insects and thus emitted an intense smell. With hybrid roses, the priority has been shifted to the color of the flowers or the size of the petals.

Theold rosesthey have small but strongly perfumed flowers. In the garden, they can be grown to create fragrant bushes.

When to plant old roses?
The planting of old roses generally takes place from November to March. Ancient roses can be remontant. Thesetypes of roses they bloom from spring to summer.

Modern roses or hybrid tea roses

The name derives from the historicalPink thea, one of the first roses to be hybridized. In 1867 the first "modern rose" or "hybrid tea rose" was born. The colors of modern roses are the most varied, starting from white to purple.

The blue rose and the black rose do not exist in nature (not even as hybrids) but are obtained by coloring the petals of white roses as explained in the article dedicated tomeaning of the black rose.

Between modern rosesthose appear remontant, that is, roses that begin to bloom with the dawn of spring and continue to bloom in late autumn or even until the beginning of winter.

Betweenall kinds of modern roses we have:

  • Sapling roses
  • Shrubby
  • Dwarf roses (miniature roses)
  • English roses
  • Sermentose
  • Ground cover roses
  • Hybrids of tea and Floribunda
  • Nostalgic
  • Climbing roses

Climbing roses can be grown in pots as long as you allow the plant the appropriate space for growth. What does it mean? That the size of the grow pot should be at least 80cm in diameter. All the info to grow roses in pots: climbing roses in pots.

Nostalgic roses

Nostalgic roses are those selected to recall the shapes and scents ofold roses, however, the colors are much more muted and the blooms more generous.

Scented roses

The scent of roses is so appreciated that it is the secret ingredient of an emollient water: rose water. The aromatic compounds responsible for the scent of roses are different. The main constituents are alcohols such as geraniol, L-citronellol and camphor. The compound β-Damascenone also makes a great contribution to the scent of the rose. The list of the most fragrant varieties of roses is available on the in-depth page: fragrant roses.
